Three separate blockchains, three separate contracts

TRC20, ERC20 and BEP20 are token standards used on three different blockchain networks: TRON, Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain, respectively. Although USDT exists on all three, each version is a separate token contract on a separate blockchain — they are not interchangeable, and a balance on one network cannot be spent or received directly on another.

Fees, speed and typical use

TRC20 transfers on TRON are generally low-cost and fast, which has made TRC20 a popular default for USDT deposits and withdrawals on many exchanges. ERC20 transfers on Ethereum typically involve higher gas fees, paid in ETH, and fees fluctuate with network congestion. BEP20 transfers on BNB Smart Chain are usually cheaper than ERC20 while offering a similar technical interface, since BEP20 is designed to be compatible with the ERC20 standard.

Choosing the right network

Before sending or receiving USDT, confirm which network standard both the sending and receiving wallets support. Sending TRC20 USDT to an address that only accepts ERC20 or BEP20 (or vice versa) can result in a failed transfer or, in some wallet configurations, permanent loss of funds. When in doubt, send a small test amount first and verify it on the appropriate blockchain explorer before transferring a larger amount.
